Top Research and Development companies in Italy by revenue

2014 saw Italy’s gross domestic expenditure on Research and Development amount to just short of 22.3 Billion Euros, 6.2% more than 2013. At the same time the ratio of gross domestic expenditure on research and development to GDP shot up from 1.31% in 2013 to 1.38% in 2014, with a broad increase in intramural R&D. Business enterprise R&D expenditure saw a 7.5% increase and higher education 6.5%, government project encountered a hike of 0.8% and in the non-profit sector, R&D enjoyed a rise of 5.5%.

In 2016 the EU's Member States spent a total of €300 Billion on Research & Development. 2016 saw Italy’s own gross domestic expenditure on Research and Development at almost 23.2 Billion Euros, a spend that was up 4.6% on 2015. The ratio of GERD to GDP was 1.38%. Expenditure on intramural R&D increased to more than 9% for business enterprises, remained steady for government projects, and reduced for the higher education and private non-profit sectors, a sharp drop of almost 19% for the latter.
