Top Oil and Gas companies in Italy by revenue

Italy enjoys some of the EU's biggest hydrocarbon resources and has been mining them for centuries, with archaeological evidence dating back to the first century AD. They began drilling oil the modern way in 1860, at Parma. But 2007 saw the start of a downturn, with new exploratory drilling projects dropping to fewer than ten wells a year.

2014 saw the trend hit rock bottom, with no new wells drilled at all, partly because there are few new resources to tap into, partly because of the infamously complex bureaucratic processes involved, but mainly because of the climate change-fuelled global slow down in extracting fossil fuels. These days Italy produces less than 8% of its own oil and its refineries source most of the crude oil they need from North Africa
At the same time Italy has the world's 37th-largest natural gas export levels, at 68,000,000 cu m. They remain Southern Europe's largest oil and gas producer and about 70% of liquid production comes from the Val d’Agri field. The biggest gas producers in Italy are the vast Adriatic fields.
The recent overall decline in production of hydrocarbons in Italy might not last much longer thanks to three enormous projects, namely Tempa Rossa by Total, Eni’s Phase 2 development of Val d’Agri, and new gas production from Eni’s impressive offshore Argo Cluster project.
