Top Energy and Utilities companies in Italy by revenue

In autumn 2017 the credit rating agency Moody's confirmed Italy's rating as Baa. At the same time Standard & Poor's changed the nation's credit rating from BBB- to BBB, giving it a more stable outlook than in recent years. It was the first time since 1988 they'd raised the country's sovereign rating. Better still, long-term economic recovery in Italy has been supported by investments from billionaire investor and financial whiz Warren Buffett. The signs are looking good.

The Italian electricity market stands 4th in the EU, and their gas market is at number 3. Demand for electricity during hot summers tends to soar, as it did in 2015, while in 2016 demand fell to 2014 levels. Acquirente Unico, AU, is the nation's only energy buyer, a state-owned body responsible for the electricity supply to Italy's regulated market. In future it looks like there will be a sharp increase in thermo-generation and an associated drop in imports. As well as the major player AU, which has a 25.7% market share, six more providers produce nearly 50% of Italy's power. A relatively new player, EPH, has bought thermo plants from E.On and is set to make a bigger impact in future. And A2A also has a strong market presence.
